Background of the study
Gender-based violence (GBV) represents a profound social challenge with far-reaching consequences for communities. In Akure South, incidents of GBV have garnered increasing attention due to their detrimental impact on individual well-being, community cohesion, and overall social development. GBV, which encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, is rooted in patriarchal social structures and cultural norms that perpetuate gender inequality. The prevalence of GBV not only affects the immediate victims but also undermines the social fabric by instilling fear, reducing economic productivity, and hindering educational opportunities for women (Adekunle, 2023). Social stigma and a culture of silence often prevent survivors from reporting abuse, further exacerbating the problem. Studies indicate that communities with high rates of GBV suffer from long-term social and psychological consequences that can span generations (Balogun, 2024). Additionally, the normalization of violence in some cultural contexts has led to a reluctance among community members to challenge abusive practices. As the community grapples with these issues, there is an urgent need to understand the underlying factors that contribute to GBV and to develop interventions that address its root causes. Research in Akure South suggests that improving legal frameworks, enhancing public awareness, and promoting gender equality are critical steps in mitigating GBV and its adverse social impacts (Olaoye, 2025). This study investigates the multifaceted dimensions of GBV in Akure South, emphasizing the interplay between cultural, economic, and social factors in shaping its prevalence and consequences.
Statement of the problem
In Akure South, gender-based violence remains a pervasive problem that undermines social stability and the well-being of affected individuals. Despite efforts to combat GBV, the persistence of patriarchal attitudes and weak enforcement of protective laws contribute to a culture of impunity (Adekunle, 2023). Survivors often face societal stigma, which discourages them from seeking legal or medical assistance, thereby perpetuating the cycle of violence. The resulting social consequences include disrupted family structures, diminished economic participation by women, and long-term psychological trauma. Additionally, the lack of adequate support services and public awareness campaigns has left many victims without the necessary resources to recover and rebuild their lives (Balogun, 2024). The failure to address GBV comprehensively not only endangers individuals but also hampers overall community development and social cohesion. Given the complex interplay of cultural, economic, and institutional factors, there is a pressing need to evaluate the extent of GBV and its social repercussions in Akure South to inform effective policy and community-based interventions (Olaoye, 2025).
Objectives of the study
To assess the prevalence and forms of gender-based violence in Akure South.
To evaluate the social consequences of GBV on victims and the broader community.
To recommend policy interventions and support systems to mitigate GBV.
Research questions
What is the prevalence of gender-based violence in Akure South?
How does GBV affect the social and economic well-being of individuals and communities?
What interventions can effectively reduce GBV and support its survivors?
Research Hypotheses
H1: Gender-based violence is highly prevalent in Akure South.
H2: GBV has significant negative social and economic impacts on affected communities.
H3: Comprehensive policy and community interventions can reduce the incidence of GBV.
Significance of the study
This study is significant because it sheds light on the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in Akure South and its wide-ranging social consequences. The findings will support the formulation of targeted policies and community interventions, thereby enhancing social justice and public safety (Adekunle, 2023; Balogun, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining gender-based violence and its social consequences within Akure South Local Government Area. It does not address GBV in other regions or focus on non-social aspects of the issue.
